National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health is a UK examination board which sets the syllabuses and methods of assessment for vocational qualifications. It was founded in 1979 as an examining and awarding body with charitable status[2]. It provides certificates and diplomas in health, safety and environmental matters. It does not provide courses itself, but sets examinations and accredits other organizations who do the actual teaching. Courses are provided and examinations taken in 65 countries as well as the UK [3]. It is itself accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority of England.

History
NEBOSH was set up in 1979 as the National Safety Examinations Board, but quickly changed to its present name, with Richard Booth as the first Chair.[4] The first NEBOSH approved examinations were held in 1980, for modules leading to an Ordinary Level and Higher Level Certificate.[4]. Qualifications were later expanded to include a Diploma. In 1992 it was incorporated as a limited company and registered as a charity: in 1999 it moved to its present premises.[4] In 2000 it was accredited by the QCA and in 2001 introduced post-nominals for holders of certain of its qualifications.[4] In 2006 the 100,000 General Cerificate was awarded.[4]
