Slot insulation is common name for the shielding material found inside a power generator's rotor. Specifically, slot insulation is what comes between the instances of electrically-conducive winding in a rotor and its body.[1] Due to their operating environment, the ability to withstand high temperatures is a foremost concern with regard to slot insulation. In the 1970s, much slot armor had a Class F temperature rating (an operational range up to 155°C).[2] Today, there are commercial available slot insulation materials that have a Class H temperature rating (an operational range up to 180°C)[3] Slot insulation generally gains its heat resistant capabilities from its construction of composite laminate materials made of epoxy, aramid, and dielectric films.[4]
