Pyogenic refers to bacterial infections that make pus.[1]

The pus is mostly composed of dead neutrophils that are destroyed by bacteria such as Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus through the release of leukocidins.[2] Therefore leukocidin producing bacteria are usually referred to as pyogenic.[2]

The name for pyogenic granuloma is misleading because it is not a true granuloma and is not pus forming. Actually, it is a capillary hemangioma of lobular subtype which is the reason they are often quite prone to bleeding.[3]
