Hyperpnea is increased depth of breathing when required to meet demand, as during or following exercise or when the body lacks oxygen (hypoxia), for instance in high altitude or as a result of anaemia.
Hyperpnea may also occur as a result of sepsis, and is usually a sign of the beginning of refractory sepsis.
Lungs and breathing activity |
Bradypnea - decreased breathing rate |
Dyspnea or shortness of breath - sensation of respiratory distress |
Eupnea - normal breathing |
Hyperaeration/Hyperinflation - increased lung volume |
Hyperpnea - faster and/or deeper breathing |
Hyperventilation - increased breathing that causes CO2 loss |
Labored breathing - physical presentation of respiratory distress |
Tachypnea - increased breathing rate |
Tachypnea differs from hyperpnea in that tachypnea is rapid shallow breaths, while hyperpnea is deep breaths.[1]
