A spottle is a funnel-shaped object, usually made out of a bottle with the bottom either cut (in the case of plastic) or broken out (glass) usually used to inhale marijuana smoke (occasionally other substances) when spotting. The term is a portmanteau of "spot" and "bottle".

As the practice of spotting releases hot smoke, many fledgling smokers prefer to use a spottle that cools the air before they inhale it. To do this the spottle may be filled with ice. Typically this will involve a plastic bottle with the bottom portion cut off. It is then reversed and re-inserted to hold the ice in. Small holes are punched in the base to allow the smoke to enter the ice compartment. Alternatively (with glass bottles) the spottle may simply be stored in a freezer to chill it.

A more complicated form of the paraphernalia, involves combining a spottle and a water bong, such that after the smoke is collected in the funnel it is then filtrated through water before it is inhaled. This device is called a "spong" - a portmanteau of "spottle" and "bong". The water in a spong may or may not be frozen, or have ice added as a way of further cooling the smoke.

An advanced spottle design [1] was researched and developed called The H.O.O.T.E.R (Healthier Organic Options To Enjoy Recreation) Using an advanced design of a hooter/toker/spittle to effectively use water to cool the smoke produced by spotting/hotkniving of organic materials, allowing for a smoother and more enjoyable inhalation. This device also features a metal protector for the sides to reduce the chance of contact between the plastic and hot objects. As stated above ice further enhances the cooling effect.
