  1. Line barrel with watermelons, cut up watermelons and put in crocks.
  2. Put cherry leaves and apple leaves between layers.
  3. Put cherry leaves and apple leaves on top.
  4. Take cold water (one large pail full) and put in 1-cup salt.
  5. Pour over watermelons and put heavy weight and boards on top.
  6. All holes fill up with water.
  7. Continue until water comes over the top of watermelons.
