Macvey Napier FRS (11 April 1776 in Kirkintilloch - 11 February 1847 in Edinburgh) was a Scottish lawyer and an esteemed editor of the Encyclopædia Britannica. A hard-working scholar in his youth, he was recruited by Archibald Constable. He in turn recruited several eminent authorities to write in the fifth edition and its supplement, as well as in the 7th edition of the Britannica.[citation needed]

Napier studied at the University of Glasgow and University of Edinburgh, and became a professor of conveyancing at the latter university. He was inducted into the Royal Society of London for the Improvement of Natural Knowledge in 1817 [1]
