Woodworking machines that form a wide flat surface on a rough-sawn board. The rotating cutter head is mounted in a flat guide surface.

These machines do not form boards to a particular thickness, which is carried out by a thicknesser instead. Some machines, particularly European, are convertible between these two tasks. These are known as planer-thicknessers.

If a surface planer also has a vertical fence, it may be used as a jointer for forming square edges. Many jointers are much narrower than surface planers. They're capable of the same work, but only on narrow timber.

The hand tool is a plane and the electric hand-held version is an electric plane.
