DOCS Education
DOCS Education, formerly known as the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation, based in Seattle, Washington, provides continuing education to dental professionals on oral and IV sedation as well as emergency preparedness training. The group’s membership consists of over 3,500 dentists who utilize the methods taught for treating patients. DOCS Education also sells relevant and necessary dental products and equipment including emergency medical supplies, monitoring equipment, and educational materials.

History
Founded in Lafayette Hill, PA, in 1999 by Drs. Michael Silverman, DMD, and Anthony Feck, DMD, DOCS Education was formed as a direct response to the doctors’ observation of how many patients exhibited dental fear and anxiety.[1] Feck and Silverman began developing safe and effective oral sedation dentistry techniques and protocols to help with these common issues. Over the past decade, DOCS Education has taught thousands of dentists and their teams how to safely implement sedation dentistry into their own practices.
Educational programs
All of DOCS Education’s programs are designed exclusively by practicing dental and medical professionals. They are built upon the science and methodology of oral sedatives, patient psychology, and pain management and control.[2] The DOCS Education curriculum has advanced with science over time, expanding to a wider range of drug protocols and in-depth patient case studies. Oral sedation techniques have progressed beyond just Valium® to a variety of safe and tested medications ideal for sedation dentistry.
The DOCS Education faculty consists of well-known educators such as Leslie Fang, MD, PhD, and Michael Mermigas, DDS, RPh. Along with other faculty members, they have years of teaching experience and speak frequently at dental meetings both nationally and internationally. Additionally, faculty members frequently consult with dental boards that are in the process of revising, developing, or adding sedation regulations. DOCS Education supports the website SedationRegulations.com which provides information about sedation regulations on a state-by-state basis.
Public influence
DOCS Education also maintains the educational website SedationCare.com to help inform the public on the availability and safety of sedation dentistry. The site includes statistical data, patient educational materials, published articles, media reports (Good Morning America), procedure and medication information, as well as a locator to help patients find local qualified sedation dentists in their area. The organization itself has been quoted in the New York Times as well as the Wall Street Journal with regards to sedation dentistry and its use by general dentists. Active in sedation research, DOCS Education promotes safety principles with its Sedation Research Fund. The Fund provides grants to those wishing to study the safety and efficacy of oral sedation dentistry and is completely supported by donations.

As the science has changed over the years, so has the DOCS curriculum, expanding to a wider range of drug protocols and in-depth patient case studies. AGD/PACE approval
DOCS Education courses carry the Academy of General Dentistry's (AGD) PACE approval, which is accepted in most states for CE requirements. Qualification courses consist of 25 to 65 hours of instruction, exceeding the 2007 guidelines established by the American Dental Association.[3]
Courses
Course offerings include IV Sedation Dentistry, Oral Sedation Dentistry, Pediatric Sedation Dentistry, Sedation Solutions, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and many more. Courses take place across the United States in major metropolitan cities such as San Francisco, Chicago, Washington DC, Memphis, Seattle, Atlanta, and Boston, as well as at universities including NYU and Duquesne University.
