HealthyWage is an American healthcare and Internet start-up company that designs and implements health incentive programs and contests.[1] In January 2010, the company became the first in the United States to offer a free health incentive directly to consumers.

Services

HealthyWage users join programs tailored to specific goals, like losing weight. HealthyWage's first program, the ongoing BMI Challenge, pays Americans who move from an obese BMI to a normal BMI.[2]

The Matchup is a weight loss competition in which teams of five use teamwork and tools to lose weight over a period of time.[3] HealthyWage pays a large prize to the participants with the greatest percentage weight loss.[4] Participants are disqualified if they lose too much weight too quickly, so the winning team is the one where all five teammates guide one another through several months of healthy weight loss.[5]

The HealthyWage advisory board includes leading medical and behavioral economic experts, like Dan Ariely.

History

HealthyWage was founded in 2009 in New York City by former healthcare consultant David Roddenberry and his colleagues Jimmy Fleming and Christina Jenkins, M.D. The company launched its website later that year at TechCrunch in San Francisco.[6].

Most of HealthyWage's programs are free for users. The company derives its revenue from corporations that sponsor health challenges (individually or as part of a syndicate) for marketing to the general public, or to provide special benefits and incentives for customers or employees.

The company has not yet reported its user success statistics, but, according to Roddenberry, the success rate is higher than expected.
