Knovel is a privately held company, founded in 1999, that provides science and engineering reference resources by vertical industry, including handbooks, books, databases, and conference proceedings.[1] Through the activation of interactive productivity tools, users are able to analyze and manipulate data from tables, graphs, and equations and export the data to spreadsheets and other data applications.

Co-founder Chris Forbes has held the position of President and CEO of Knovel since the company's inception.[2] Sasha Gurke, also co-founder and Executive Vice President, is a trained chemist and process engineer.[3] Prior to Knovel, he spent 15 years with Chemical Abstract Service/American Chemical Society. He applied his experience in the development of information products for applied scientists and engineers to lead the original product design for Knovel. David Shaffer, Chairman of the Board is also currently executive chairman of Cengage, previously known as Thomson Learning.[4]

Knovel Platform

The Knovel platform is a web-based application that features a search engine, a content repository of digitized resources, and interactive productivity tools. Knovel indexes reference books, including Perry's Chemical Engineers' Handbook and Lange's Handbook of Chemistry, databases and conference proceedings licensed from STM publishers, including John Wiley & Sons, Elsevier, McGraw-Hill and Springer Science+Business Media, as well as professional societies including American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) .

Knovel is sold by subject areas, however some premium titles, such as Merck Index and CCPS are sold separately. Knovel’s content repository of digitized resources is organized into the following subject areas:

  • Adhesives, Coatings, Sealants & Inks
  • Aerospace & Radar Technology
  • Biochemistry, Biology & Biotechnology
  • Ceramics & Ceramic Engineering
  • Chemistry & Chemical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering & Construction Materials
  • Earth Sciences
  • Electrical & Power Engineering
  • Electronics & Semiconductors
  • Environment & Environmental Engineering
  • Food Science
  • General Engineering & Engineering Management
  • Industrial Engineering & Operations Management
  • Mechanics & Mechanical Engineering
  • Metals & Metallurgy
  • Nanotechnology
  • Oil & Gas Engineering
  • Pharmaceuticals, Cosmetics & Toiletries
  • Plastics & Rubber
  • Safety & Industrial Hygiene
  • Sustainable Energy & Development
  • Textiles
  • Transportation Engineering

Knovel’s search capabilities include delivery of electronic resources with interactive productivity tools. Information retrieved using fielded numeric or numeric range search delivers data contained in reference tables, graphs or equations. This tabular or graphic data is Knovelized, meaning that the data extracted from the electronic text is displayed in a reader, in a form where it can be manipulated, customized and/or exported to Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, CAD applications, and other output formats.
