Nemifitide is an experimental, unapproved drug which has been studied for efficacy as an antidepressant in animal testing[1] and Phase 2 clinical trails.[2]

Description

Chemically unrelated to existing approved antidepressants, nemifitide has a molecular structure similar to melanocyte-inhibiting factor.[1]page 303

Clinical pharmacology

Nemifitide has been shown to exhibit activity as an antagonist at the 5-HT2A serotonin receptor subtype, because it prevents the development of fever ordinarily induced by administration of 2,5-Dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine. It is believed that the compound's effectiveness as an antidepressant is mediated, at least in part, via serotonergic mechanisms.[1]page 307
