- 1 September 2004 - Beginning of Beslan school hostage crisis, when a group of armed mostly Ingush and Chechen militants took more than 1,100 people (including 777 children) hostage at School Number One (SNO) in the town of Beslan, North Ossetia
- 5-6 September 1972 - Members of the Israeli Olympic team were taken hostage and eventually murdered by Black September, a militant group with ties to Yasser Arafat’s Fatah organization, in what came to be known as the Munich massacre
- 11 September 2001 - September 11 attacks (pictured) — a series of coordinated suicide attacks by al-Qaeda upon the United States, leaving 2,973 victims and over 6,000 injured
- 16 September 2001 - Osama bin Laden read a statement later broadcast by Qatar's Al Jazeera satellite channel denying responsibility for the September 11 attacks
