Woodworking machines that form a flat right-angled edge onto a board. The rotating cutter head is mounted adjacent to a flat guide surface, usually set into a table with the guide surface as a vertical fence alongside.
Jointers are a sub-group of surface planers, but with the addition of this fence. Many of them are only narrow though, for cost reasons, so are of limited use as surface planers.
