Sulfadimethoxine (trade name Di-Methox, Albon) is a sulfonamide antibiotic. Albon is produced by Pfizer Animal Health and is available as a oral suspension, tablet or bolus. It is used to treat many infections including treatment of respiratory, urinary tract, enteric, and soft tissue infections.[1] It is most frequently used in veterinary medicine. Sulfadimethoxine inhibits bacterial synthesis of folic acid (pteroylglutamic acid) from para-aminobenzoic acid. It is also commonly used for the treatment of coccidiosis in many species.[2]

Side Effects

Some side effects include:

  • Redness of the eye[3]
  • Discharge form the eye
  • Other symptoms related to the eye
  • Bleeding
  • Vomiting and diarrhea
  • Increased thirst is common[4]

Animals should be kept well hydrated to prevent the formation of sulfa crystals in the animal's urine.[5]

It has been shown to be effective against streptococci, klebsiella, proteus, shigella, staphylococci, escherichia, and salmonella.
