DUAC, also called DUAC Topical Gel, is the drug name for a topical gel that contains 1% Clindamycin Phosphate and 5% Benzoyl peroxide, manufactured by Stiefel Labs. The topical gel is effective in the treatment of acne. DUAC is a prescription drug that currently (Feb. 2009) does not have a generic version available. An identical brand-name equivalent is BenzaClin, manufactured by Sanofi-Aventis. Common side effects of Duac are peeling, itching, redness, and dryness. Prolonged exposure to natural or artificial sun light (UV Rays) is not recommended. Also, benozoyl peroxide may cause bleaching of hair, fabric, etc and topical clindamycin may rarely cause diarrhea or colitis.

Mode of Action

Clindamycin phosphate is a water-soluble ester of the semi-synthetic antibiotic, clindamycin, which is synthesized from lincomycin. It prevents the P. Acnes bacteria from replicating by preventing it from making vital proteins. Benzoyl peroxide also kills P. Acnes, but since it is an oxidizer, not an antibiotic, it is not subject to P. Acnes resistance like clindamycin phosphate is. Also, benzoyl peroxide dries out the area, preventing clogged pores and is a keratolytic agent.

How Supplied

Duac comes supplied in two ways, in a 45 gram tube, and in the DUAC CS Convenience Kit, containing the 45 gram tube and a bottle of SFC Lotion, a gentle, soap-free cleanser.

SFC Lotion

SFC Lotion is a gentle, soap-free cleanser that comes packaged with DUAC CS. It contains: Water, PEG-75, stearyl alcohol, sodium cocoyl isethionate, methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben. It is applied to either wet or dry skin then rubbed off with a tissue or soft cloth.
